Company S is one of the largest defense contractors in the United States. It supplies the U.S. Department of Defense and allied militaries worldwide through a global network of suppliers.

Industry Context

For large defense contractors, supply chain resilience carries outsized stakes, since disruptions at even a single supplier’s facility can delay delivery of complex, mission-critical systems under binding government contracts. At the same time, competitive proposal development for defense contracts increasingly required contractors to lock in qualified suppliers early, particularly for complex bills of materials and RFPs setting minimum thresholds for locally sourced content. By the early 2010s, commercial data aggregators such as Dun & Bradstreet and government sources like the System for Award Management had made it feasible to build enterprise supplier intelligence platforms that blend third-party business data with a company’s internal ERP and procurement data. But for a defense contractor specifically, any such system also had to meet Department of Defense security standards, adding real technical and compliance complexity beyond a typical commercial analytics tool.

Current Situation

Company S selected Iknow to design, develop, and implement a global supplier intelligence system to support its worldwide procurement and supply chain organization. The scope of work was to design and implement a new system that would access third-party content for millions of suppliers and potential suppliers, produce outputs in various formats, and integrate with Company S’s existing Oracle databases and SAP ERP systems. The new system also had to be compatible with its existing technology infrastructure and be certified to Department of Defense standards.

• Global supply chain disruption risk. With tens of thousands of suppliers located around the world, a significant disruptive event at any one supplier’s facility could delay final delivery of a major radar or missile program.
• Fragmented, outdated supplier information. Company S lacked up-to-date, consolidated information on both current and potential suppliers, limiting its ability to respond quickly or compete effectively.
• Slow proposal development and supplier lock-in. Company S needed to cut weeks from proposal development cycle times and lock in qualified suppliers earlier, particularly for complex bills of materials and RFPs requiring locally sourced content.
• Demanding integration and certification requirements. Any new system needed to integrate with Company S’s existing Oracle and SAP ERP systems and be certified to Department of Defense standards.

• Advanced search and alerting. Iknow built advanced search letting users select which source content to incorporate and search suppliers by country, commodity group, and supplier name, along with ad hoc and stored queries, saved and annotated searches, and automated alerts.
• Structured supplier profile design. Iknow designed a multi-page Company Profile for each supplier, combining company and financial information, delivery and quality performance indicators, ownership and certifications data, competitor information, and capabilities data such as NAICS, SIC, and Hoovers industry codes.
• Human intelligence integration. Iknow incorporated human-sourced intelligence, letting Company S employees submit and attach notes and documents about specific suppliers to augment the numerical and structured data in each profile.
• Navigation and user experience design. Iknow built a consistent horizontal and vertical navigation structure giving users system-wide functions alongside supplier-specific navigation within each profile.
• Certification and integration. Iknow tested and certified the system to Department of Defense standards and integrated it with Company S’s existing technology infrastructure.

Combining Millions of Third-Party Records with Internal Systems Under DoD Standards

Building a single system that could credibly combine millions of third-party supplier records with Company S’s own internal Oracle and SAP data, while meeting Department of Defense security requirements, demanded far more than a typical commercial integration project. Iknow addressed this by designing the system architecture from the outset around integration with Company S’s existing databases and ERP systems, as well as DoD certification requirements, rather than treating security and compliance as an afterthought.

Iknow addressed this by organizing each supplier’s data into a structured, navigable Company Profile that combines multiple chart formats, tables, and human-intelligence notes into one consistent, purpose-built page layout.
